It's a huge dance sensation and a sea of white! Just a few days left until one of the high points in the global clubbing calendar hits Prague on 19 May 2012 – Sensation! The event will be held at the Sazka Arena.

This huge phenomenon started in Amsterdam in 2000, at the Amsterdam Arena, home of Ajax Football Club, and a year later Sensation turned its trademark white, now a symbol of the event. Miles Stutterheim, the brother of Sensation CEO Duncan Stutterheim, tragically died in a car crash, and Duncan Stutterheim asked clubbers to wear white at Sensation, as mourners did at his brother’s funeral. The majority of the 40,000 attendees complied with his wishes, and today participants continue to wear white at Sensation.

Clubbers can look forward to stage shows with acrobats, dancers, lasers, lightshows, fireworks and much more. The famous Megamix is regarded by many clubbers as the high point of Sensation, a journey taking them through musical history, accompanied by a show and fireworks. Each year, Sensation has a different theme, and each show is unique.

Some of the best DJs in the world have played at Sensation and helped to create the event’s unique atmosphere. They include Tiësto, Sven Vath, Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, David Guetta, Richie Hawtin, Axwell, Fedde le Grand, Steve Angelo, Sebastian Ingrosso and Erick Morillo. Many of them say that Sensation has been a highlight in their careers.

Sensation has gone truly global and takes place in every corner of the planet, from Brazil to Belgium. This year, Sensation is being held in Asia for the first time, in South Korea.

At first sight, green space is rare in the historic centre of Prague. But three green secrets are waiting to be discoveredamong the Baroque palaces, ancient churches and twisting lanes. Despite being located in the heart of Prague, all are oases of peace amidst the bustle of city life, and are located near our Bohemia Prague Apartments.

Waldstein Gardens (Valdštejnská zahrada), Letenská Street, Lesser Quarter

Waldstein Gardens in Prague

The grandest of the trio, the Waldstein Gardens are a huge surprise. You could easily walk past them and never know they existed, hidden as they are behind a long blank wall close to Malostranská metro station. But once you step through the wooden door on Letenská, you’re transported back a few centuries into a world of formal layouts, neat hedges, strutting peacocks and fountains. In the 17th century the infamous warlord Albrecht von Waldstein had several palaces demolished to make way for the gardens and the palace named after him.

At the heart of the Waldstein Gardens is the huge SalaTerrena, an Italianate loggia, in front of which stretches an avenue of statues, the originals of which were stolen by the Swedes in 1648. Look out for the mock grotto along the southern wall, with fake stalactites, and a small aviary. Open April-October only.

Vojan Gardens (Vojanovy sady), U lužického semináře, Lesser Quarter

Vojan Gardens in Prague

Close to the Waldstein Gardens are the Vojanovysady, which are also hidden behind a long wall. They used to be a monastic garden belonging to the Carmelite order, but today they’re a favourite spot place to relax on a sunny day. As they are more informal than the Waldstein Gardens, you can sit on the grass, under the shade of one of the many trees. Open all year.

Franciscan Gardens (Františkanská zahrada), accessed from Václavské nám (via Pasáž Alfa) or from Vodičkova (via PasážSvětozor), New Town

Franciscan Gardens in Prague

Just a few metres away from Wenceslas Square, very close to our residences Bohemia Apartments Prague Centre and Bohemia Apartments Prague Wenceslas Square, is the modestly-sized but beautiful square of the Fransiscan Gardens, enclosed by an interesting mix of old and relatively new architecture. The soaring Gothic church of Our Lady of the Snows (Panna Maria Sněžná) is Prague’s second tallest after St Vitus Cathedral and towers over the northern side of the gardens. It contrasts with the other structures around the gardens. In summer, the park benches of the gardens are a favourite spot to enjoy an ice cream from the nearby Světozor sweet shop. Open all year.

Prague is most famous for its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, but the Art Nouveau style (known as Secese in Czech and Jugendstil in German), which you should look out for while sightseeing, also helps give the city centre its special character.

Art Nouveau developed in the late 19th early/20th century and became very popular throughout Europe and beyond. The movement was inspired by natural forms, resulting in elegant flowing lines and an abundance of curves, in architecture, art and furniture design. Famous exponents of the style include Victor Horta in Brussels, Gustav Klimt and Otto Wagner in Vienna and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Glasgow. Each of them interpreted the style in slightly different ways, and distinctive local branches of Art Nouveau emerged.

In the Czech lands Art Nouveau was associated most of all with the artist Alfons Mucha (see Bohemia Apartments blog article on Alfons Mucha), whose poster designs are synonymous with the style. Art Nouveau architecture was equally important, and architects such as Osvald Polívka, Antonín Balšánek and Josef Fanta enthusisatically embraced the style.

Alfons Mucha - Art Noveau In Prague

The most famous examples of Art Noveau architecture in Prague include the Municipal House (Obecní dům) on Náměstí Republiky, the adjacent Hotel Paříž, the K&K Hotel Central on Hybernská, Národní třída numbers 7 and 9, and the main railway station (Praha hlavní nádraží). The most well-known piece of Art Nouveau sculpture is the Jan Hus statue on Old Town Square, designed by Ladislav Šaloun. Ironically, by the time the memorial was unveiled, Art Nouveau was already out of fashion. Šaloun also designed the grave of the most famous Czech composer, Antonín Dvořák, at Vyšehrad Cemetery, where many other leading Czechs are buried.

As well as grand public buildings, Art Nouveau architects designed many private apartments, notable examples of which can be seen along the riverbank south of the National Theatre (Národní divadlo), and in the inner suburbs such as Vinohrady.

If you have children with you, you can take them to the traditional Easter Market in Central Park in Kbely and let them enjoy an entertaining program competitions, magicians and animal performances. A similar program for kids is prepared for Easter Sunday (April 4 )in Prosek on the bobsleigh track. All these events are for free.

Willow whip and cake in shape of young lamb

And what are the most typical customs held in Czech Republic?

To keep every girl healthy and pretty for upcoming year, Czech men whip them with a stick plaited of willow twigs. As a gesture of thanks girls and women give them painted eggs, small chocolate and sometimes small glass of typical Czech alcohol - the slivovitz.

And because Prague is full of tourists at Easter, avoid searching for accommodation on the last moment. You can contact Bohemia Apartments Prague. We will provide you with luxury apartments, comfort and competitive rates. Do not hesitate and book Prague apartment, we look forward to seeing you!
